A New Year, or just a new day?
Posted by Tien Nguyen under Uncategorized
Midnight, January 1st..Does it really mark a new year, or just a new day?
What is so special about this completely arbitrary day, whose purpose is to celebrate such an arbitrary “event”? Is the annual orbit of the earth around the sun have any significance about it that people feel the need to celebrate?
Is it a long (or short) enough period to reflect how much we’ve grown (or degressed)? It is an externally constant state, so how could it possibly relate to our own highly variable lives during this 12 month period?
Some grow more in a year than others do, and some years grow for some..more than others. A year for some can be as productive and fulfilling as a lifetime is for others..and some years can be what define a lifetime.
So now that the sun has been orbited by the earth some 20 times since I was born..how far have I actually gone? That’s over a 2 billon mile ride I’ve been on, and will continue to cover billions more mles regardless of what I do. While most of my life has so far felt more like Mercury or Venus years, the last few..and seemingly the next few..have been more along the lines of Mars/Jupiter years..
So time ought not be measured in how far the earth has moved..but how far we’ve moved in our own lives..
